In order to make sure your dishwasherwill be working properly over the years, you need to perform preventive maintenance. Proper cleaning and making the right use out of the unit will definitely increase its lifespan. Here are a few good practices around a dishwasher!

Clean it!

The door needs to be cleaned once in a while. Use a warm rag and some household detergent cleaner to clean the space between the door and the bottom. Specific deodorizer made for dishwasher can be used to prevent mold growth and keep the interior smelling fresh. Once in a while, it is recommended to run an empty load with a cup of vinegar or with the cleaning lozenges made especially for that!

Lightly Rinse the Dishes

Before placing them in the dishwasherdishes should be rinsed off. Food bites can stick to dishes if they are not rinsed out. Try to scrape food bits off. Rinsing too much can also be a problem, since it uses a lot of hot water. A lot of people don’t pre-rinse the plates. However, they often find surprises when they unload the unit.

Choose the Right Cycle

There are different cycle options available on a dishwasher and you probably don’t even know. The normal cycle shouldn’t be used for all types of dishesExtra dirty dishes or pots may require a heavier water circulation. Read the owner’s manual to find out which cycles are available on your unit

Don’t Overload

It can be tempting to put more dishes in, either to save loads or not to leave dishes on the counter. Yet, dishes won’t get washed properly if they are touching each other. There has to be space between them for the water to circulate. If the dishwasher is full, wait for the next load or wash the extra dishesby hand.

Clean the Filter

This piece can usually be found at the bottom of the dishwasher.  You should take it out and clean it regularly. You will probably find food and debris that didn’t make down the drain.

Clean the Door Gasket

Frequently check it to make sure it is not damaged and doesn’t need to be replaced.
